I'll start off by saying that I'm not a flute player. But i do know that the fingerings for the two instruments are nearly identical (piccolo cant go down to low C and some of the altissimo fingerings have to be tweaked for intonation purposes). The piccolo requires a very fast and small airstream and it is much easier to play out of tune with a piccolo than with a flute. You may want to ask your band director/ private teacher if they think you a ready to play the piccolo. Good luck.

At least at my school, it's the director's decision on who plays piccolo, because, for obvious reasons, you don't want an inexperienced flute player to play piccolo (Not saying you're a bad one, just making a point) Talk to your director, because it's best to be flexible with what your band needs.
