I played bassoon but I have rented an oboe and tried to teach myself. And I am and 1/2 step flat. I don't know if it's my emboucher or my air power or WHAT?? Someone help me!
thanx!

(ps: bassoons kick butt!)

The same thing happened to me when I began playing the oboe. For about a month I was almost a semi-tone flat. This may have something to do with the reed you are using. Chances are, it will also have something to do with your embouchure. Once you play more, and get better, you will find that you can vary the pitch very easily play biting the reed more to play sharper, or relaxing it more to play flatter. As you get more proficient with the reed, you'll be able to play in concert, or sligtly sharper, or flatter, simply by adjustment of the embouchure.

It will also help you just to get a few lessons for the technique, and then you should be right. Remember, oboe isn't the easiest of instruments to simply pick up straight away!

I play oboe and alto sax now and my band director might let me switch to bassoon. Will I start out playing flat?

Chances are, it's quite likely. It's very hard to play the bassoon in perfect pitch.

One of my friends has been playing for a couple of years, and she still plays slightly flat. It's really quite tricky, people tell me.
