right now i play the clarinet and would like to know about how much should i spend for a student oboe and what is a good brand. also will switching over to oboe from clarinet be difficult? i got the full alternate fingering chart off of this site and everyday i try and memorize the fingerings for when i get my oboe.

i would not buy an oboe until you really know that you want to play it maybe borrow one from school or rent one but do not buy one until you are sure as they can be very expensive i play oboe and the clarinet and it shouldn't be hard as long as you practice my one suggestion to you is to buy a coulple of reeds and practice on them first until you can get an oboe so your ombichure is correct hope this helps

I agree with Amanda about borrowing an oboe first. Probably the most difficult thing about switching form clarinet to oboe will be the fact that your teeth aren't meant to clamp down in an oboe embeschure (sp?). Lips are tightened in a smile but don't press down on the reed the way a clarinet requires. I play the oboe and had the hardest time getting a sound out of my friend's clarinet lol. Oboes offer much less resistance when playing but that also makes notes more difficult to keep steady and in tune. Does that help? Good luck Michael :)
