I recently saw a recorder for auction which had a different pattern of holes to the normal recorder: it had three single holes, a double hole, then three more single holes. Instead of the double holes being on the lowest two holes, there was just one set of double holes, right in the middle. Does anybody know anything about this? The recorder was made by the Swiss company Kung.

I finally worked out for myself what this is. It is a German fingering recorder. The extra double hole is for correcting the tuning of the F# note (soprano) in the second octave. The fingering chart here at WFG shows this hole half covered for this note on a German fingering recorder.
