I advise you not to try tremolo for another six months. It's a very advanced technique, and even then, there's a school of thought that says you should NEVER do tremolo on a clarinet.

why should you not do tremolo on clarinet? i advised my music dictionary for this to make sure i am not mixing up my facts, and tremolo is just like a trill. it isn't an overly advanced technique. unless you mean a multiphonic note, then yes i agree, they sound aweful and are usually not in tune on either note(s).

Tremolo is simply a trill that is more than a whole step away from the original note. It isn't an advanced skill, it simply requires coordination of the fingers. If it's vibrato (waviness on one note) we're talking about then on clarinet you can pretty much forget it. If you're a jazz clarinetist, then do your vibrato, but please, in every other setting clarinet should have a pure tone. Feel free to disagree...

The word tremolo means two different things. One is a waviness in the note: whereas vibrato varies the pitch, tremolo varies the volume. This is normally frowned upon for clarinet although approved of for other instruments.

The other meaning of tremolo is a trill where the two notes are more than a whole tone apart. This is perfectly normal for any instrument.

I'm not completely doubting you, Gnomon, but I have never heard of tremolo as a variation of volume. Can anyone else confirm that this is really true? I looked it up in the Harvard Dictionary of Music, but I didn't find that definition. I just don't want to have wrong information.

back to the actual questoin, talk to your band director or teacher or whatever and get them to hep u but basically just work the two notes back an dfort slpwly making sure all your fingers move at the same time then go faster then slow in counts of 4. 4 fast, 4 slow then take teh fast faster but make sure u are comfteble at one speed before you increase speed.

Rick, here's what Encyclopaedia Britannica says:

"1 a: the rapid reiteration of a musical tone or of alternating tones to produce a tremulous effect"

Emilie-Anne, are you talking about vibrato or trills?

I think the other version of tremolo, aside from the more-than-whole-step trill, is the one that strings do, when they quickly reiterate one note. I don't think that's really feasible on anything but strings.
