oboes give the tuning note, because they can be heard over every instrument. have the best intonation. and are never very far off the pitch. Oboes are not a jazz instrument. no music is written for it, and the sound is not desirable for jazz compositions. oboes don't have the raspy sound that a brass or saxophones can make. most oboists i know double on a saxophone to play in a jazz band. hope this helps.

I have a friend who played bassoon in the jazz band in middle school...it had an interesting sound, to say the least, LOL

From what I know, there isn't really a reason why the oboe gives the tuning note aside from tradition. It was probable that dating back to when the oboe was still more shawm-like (aka loud!) it could be easily heard above the rest of the quieter instruments and therefore would give the tuning note. As far as that goes now, the oboe has a somewhat more present tone than does any other single instrument (excluding brass), so it makes sense to have it do the tuning. But really, you shouldn't be dependant on the oboe for tuning your instrument within an inch of its life; you should be warmed up, in tune, and ready to go before the oboe gives the note.
Oboes and Jazz: I don't really like the combination of jazz music and oboe tone; but that's my personal opinion. There is music written for jazz oboe, but it is almost all contemporary.

every instrument can play jazz. it just depends on the popularity of the instrument in that field. as for the tuning note thing, i am not that sure too.

One of the reasons that the oboe gives the tuning note is that it has the least adjustibility. So it is best to match the other instruments to the oboe rather than try to match the oboe to them.

In our normally climate controlled playing environments, it is not too big a deal who gives the tuning note. The is tuned to an electronic tuner and everyone then tunes to the oboe.

However, in a very warm room, everyone will be sharp. There is a severe limit to how much the oboe can pull out. He/she may not be able to pull enough to match the electronic tuner. So the band tunes to the oboe rather than an electronic tuner. The main thing is that the band is in tune with itself rather than a gadget.

A similar situation exits in a cold room except that everyone will be flat. Again the oboe is severely limited in how much he/she can push in. So once again it is better to tune to the oboe rather than a gadget. This way the band will be playing together.

you can play what ever style of music which whatever instrument u want to. will it sound good, is it common, do u like it is there any music writen for it, that can be a problem but there is no law, personally i really don't want an oboe in my band (mostly electric modern jazz). theboy_2 was right about teh tuning i believe however sometimes the tuba or first clarinet gives tuning notes, violin if it is orchestra

To add to Dee's explanation... the oboe tube cannot be pushed in or out at all: it must be all the way in. If you pull out the tube it completely ruins the oboe's conical structure, and therefore the instrument's tuning with itself.

its because oboe is so hard to tune so alot of band directors just tune the band to the oboe

yes the oboe does seem to be the hardest to tune b/c it's stupid to try to make you change your embouchure to be in tune with someone else b/c you aren't going to remember the tightness/looseness when you are in the middle of playing. So why in the world does my band director tune from the clarinet, and even sometimes tuba?!?!? when all they have to do is pull out a slide or their barrel. sometimes he doesn't even tune the oboes; which doesn't make any sense, we seem to be the forgotten instrument in band.
