Is their anything i should know about clarinets N E advice would help. What is this system about Like leblenc,oehler,boehm what is the difference about them is it the key placement or something.ANd YES i do have band experience(LOTS) only w/ sax.

Are you buying a student model, or are you looking for a professional model? In any case boehm is the most commonly used fingering system in North America. Oehler is more obsolete, but still around. Almost all new instruments come with the boehm system. These systems are generally quite similar except for a few key placements, like F# and B. I'm not terribly familiar with Leblanc, I know he did make clarinets, but most of my colleagues use Buffet model clarinets, so I'm in the dark about it. In any case a few lessons from a professional clarinet teacher wouldn't hurt.

brands for a beginner would be Selmer, Bundy, Yamaha, Vito, Leblanc, Buffet to name a few. for the beginner there isn't to much to look for. you'll only need a basic model. just make sure there isn't any obvious dings that can effect intonation, keys bent, and a broken mouthpiece. other thigns are if the pads are good, and the keys are in ailignment. the best place to go is a instrument dealer. they can help you pick out a good model you'll need to begin clarinet, they might also know of good private instructor you can go to. hope this helps.

well in my opinion (and maybe its not what you're looking for) but I picked up my first clarinet in need of restoration (as with all my instruments) obviously checked for cracks and the obvious things, spent 40 British pounds on buying it and another 70 british pounds doing it up but even with that it was the most beautiful clarinet I have every played in my life, unfortunately I took it abroad and it got damaged on the plane and had to get rid of it. But I still have the original mouthpiece which I take to concerts just for good luck (sorry off the point I know) but even if u try something like that u neva know what a wonder you could pick up

I have cracked two new clarinets (Leblanc, as it happened) by doing nothing. A very distressing experience, considering they were both $1,000 pieces. I have a second hand Buffet RC which has, I pray, been through its new cracking danger phase back in 1981. Its beautiful to play. But I also have a straightforward plastic Buffet B12. You could drop it (almost), leave it in an oven (almost) etc and it would still dsound really nice for a plastic clarinet. So, for beginning I would say go for plastic and a B12. You won't have to worry about the instrument itself and you will be able to concentrate on learning.

Has anyone heard of a Hanson clarinet - they are English and recommended for beginners - the sound is lighter less mellow - this is a first clarinet for a 10 year old. We have a choice of the Buffet B12 or the Hanson. THe Hanson is made from ebonite???
They are approx. the same price.
any ideas///

I also have been looking for my first clarinet as well. I don't intend to use it for band, but rather, recreational playing. I figured I should go with a plastic clarinet, but what about brands? I just want something that sounds nice and is affordable, under $400, if possible. Any ideas?

I have a clarinet that I am trying to sell. It's not a Buffet but it's a wooden Yamaha clarinet model 450 (I do believe so). I'm only asking $350-$400 for it. I only played it for a year and a half. It's practically in mint condition...case included of course. If you need a mouthpiece I have a premiere I'll sell you for $20 with it. If you are interested e-mail me and let me know.
