For the doublers out there: do most of you use the same brands of instruments, ligatures, and mouthpieces, or do you change with each instrument? I have a Bb clarinet, A, Eb, and bass clarinet, and a soprano and alto sax, all of which I play regularly. I always use the same ligature type (rovner dark or string) and I don't know if I should just buy the same kind of mouthpieces and barrels I use for my Bb for the rest of them. Are there any that work better for an Eb but not as much for Bb, ect?

i have different setups on all my horns. i try to keep reed strengths similar enough so i don't kill myself swaping on and off horns, but in general i just keep to what works for each horn and adjust as needed to sound best

Hi,
I play Selmer and Yamaha woodwinds not because I want the same brand but because I think they are the best instruments. I have considered selling off my Mark VIs and getting Yamahas and buying something nice for my wife with the large balance.
I do use Harrison ligatures on all my saxes with hard rubber MPs. As far as reeds, I have had a lot of luck with VD and the better Rico reeds (but some of the old brown box Ricos are still on my shelf).
As a doubler, I think I tend to be a little more picky (actually fussy) on clarinet with accessories but that's the nature of the beast IMHO. I really tweak reeds with the Ridenour ATG system and have probably too many barrels. All my other ligatures are pretty much cheap classics (Luyben, VD master, Gigliotti, Bonade, etc.). You do not need to spend too much money.
I have all Hercules stands though. They are really built for hard use.

The only thing I'm really fussy about right now is reeds and ligatures. I wish they made rue lepic reeds for bass and eb clarinets. I'm not too fussy with anything else so far. My Bb and A clarinets are the same model, but everything else is pretty different. I don't even know who made my bass clarinet, and my saxes are pretty much random too. I'm wondering if I would get better results if I just went to all Yamaha like my Bb and A instruments. Once I find a mouthpiece I like I'll probly have to find it for all of them.

I use what works best for me on an individual basis on each of my horns. As it turns out, my set ups are pretty similiar in that I use Legere reeds (mostly #3) on all of my clarinets & saxes as well as Klassik string ligatures (sadly Vandoren doesn't make the Klassik for bass clarinet so I use the Masters on that horn), Walter Grabner mouthpieces on soprano (K14) and bass clarinets (LB), and Ralph Morgan custom made 6C mouthpieces on saxophone. Overall, I'd say that I have a similar tonal concept for clarinets and saxophone -- big, round, dark, vibrant, ringing, and projecting. Each set up I use gives me what I want.

All my horns are different: King soprano, Selmer alto, Conn tenor, Selmer Bb clar, Yamaha Eb, Amati C, Leblanc bass, etc. I don't think wanting to have the same brand and set-up for everything is a good idea because you automatically eliminate the possibility of finding something better or at least different.
I have never had a lot of money with which to shop around for horns, so I've basically taken the first thing that felt good to me and left it at that. I have, however, tried and changed mouthpieces and ligatures from time to time. I think they make more of a meaningful difference than a different brand of horn would make.
The only non-changing variable for me: Vandoren reeds.
