 tenor sax/bass clarinet m'piece equivalents
Author: ignatz

Hi,

I'm a tenor saxophonist playing mostly jazz on a mouthpiece with a large chamber and a tip opening of 0.110", equivalent to an Otto Link 8 or a Meyer 11. I've recently taken up bass clarinet but the mouthpiece that came with the instrument, a Yamaha 4C, feels pretty narrow. Can anyone suggests what might be a mouthpiece more equivalent to my tenor? Thanks!

The Yamaha 4C is about as close a facing as you are likely to come across and so quite unsuitable for your style.
The Vandoren B46 (.205 mm) or B50 (.215 mm) could be possible contenders

Might I suggest the Hite Bass Clarinet mouthpiece? I think it's a great starter mouthpiece. I have a serious bass clarinet student using one now, and she sounds great on it.

Of course, if you have a little extra cash, I'd take a look at the Grabner and Fobes mouthpieces. I play on a Fobes AP and love it.

And does Roger Garrett still make a bass clarinet mouthpiece? He used to make an affordable mouthpiece that played well and evenly across the register break. It might not be as open as you like, but I can get plenty of volume out of mine.

Just as a single reference point, on tenor sax, I play older Link pieces around a 7* (0.105" tip opening). I use #3 Vandoren JaZZ
On bass clarinet, I play a Fobes RR which has 0.072" tip opening with a #2.75 Legere Signature or a 2.5 Vandoren V-12.

I find these two setups have similar resistance and responsiveness.

Also, given that I mostly play Bass CL when playing in the baritone sax seat in big bands, this gives me similar resistance to my bari setup which is an old bronze bullet chamber #2 with a 0.110" opening and a Legere 3.25 Signature
