Hey guys. For our high school's musical, we are doing Thoroughly Modern Millie. I'm pretty excited for it. I was assigned Reed 3 and I just looked it all through. It look sooo fun. I'm playing Clarinet, Oboe, Tenor and possible the Soprano too. As we progress into it, what should I expect from it?
Thanks,
Trevor

My daughter played that book for her high school musical last year. What to expect? That might depend on what your primary instrument/s is/are. All four of those instruments are in Reed book 3. 90% of the book is clarinet and tenor sax. There are a number of pieces in 6 or 7 sharps. The tenor sax plays fast passages; the clarinet less so. There are only a few oboe passages. These were easy for my daughter because she is an "orchestral" oboe player (meaning that oboe is one of her primary instruments, along with alto sax and soprano sax). Others on this board who specialize in clarinet, sax and flute have found those oboe passages difficult. Her favorite parts were the soprano sax sections, and she wished there were more of them.
Also, will you be playing with others from your high school in the wind section, or will your school hire professionals for the other Reed parts? My daughter had the opportunity to play with professionals in Thoroughly Modern Millie, but it also put a bit more pressure on her. Right now she is playing a musical at a different high school where they are just using high school members, and the atmosphere is certainly more relaxed. The student musicians make mistakes and she doesn't feel like she sticks out if she makes one.

MILLIE is a great show, one of a handful that I really hope to do again. The sax soli parts are great, as are the clarinet passages especially in The Nuttycracker Suite (a musical satire of Tchaikovsky's NUTCRACKER). The oboe is prominent in THE SPEED TEST.
It has some technical challenges but is definitley one of my favorite shows. But it would be wise to bring in a pro or 3 to help.
