For those you have played this musical with the original orchestration, how difficult is the Reed 4 (oboe, EH) part? What does it mean by clarinet being optional?

I don't think it's difficult but there are many important exposed passages such as in "not while I'm around". I didn't need clarinet for this -- it may be that those passages are written out for both oboe an clarinet.

There is just a few bars of clarinet in the entire oboe book.
All of the woodwind parts are challenging. The oboe plays a lot of unison with the flute-
This is one of the all time great B'way shows and with Jonathon Tunick's Brilliant Orchestration, a very rewarding show to play.
Hopefully you will have a full Orchestra, I did it it with 28 pieces, the score really demands the full group.
Tell the flute player they will need soprano and sopranino recorders!
