 Schrieber & Sohne Bassoons

Hello. I have two Schrieber & Sohne Bassoons that require overhaul. My opinion. As I am a lowly saxophonist who has been primarily playing Irish Whistle for a good many years, I don't have a clue. A local symphony player told me that each one, with about $100.00 worth of work and new cases would be worth a pretty penny. That figure of $100.00 seemed like a pretty low estimate to me. What do overhauls typically range for old maple instruments like this?

It just depends what you mean by 'an overhaul'.

Some customers come in asking for an overhaul when all the instrument needs is minor adjustments.

The term 'overhaul' to most technicians means to strip down, clean, revarnish toneholes as required, rectify mechanical problems, renew all pads plus springs, key & tenon corks as needed. $100 might cover the cost of the materials. Costs vary from repairer to repairer but I reckon a minimum of $500 (I am in UK & have converted from pounds) but the older the instrument generally the higher the cost unless it has been regularly maintained.

Thanks Ian. Your figures are more in line with what I thought. Thanks
