Good stuff you post and inquire about.

I'd add to your list of variables ( the shaper, the gouge, the cane, its vintage, etc.) in that you can affect changes on purpose or by mistake altering the oral cavity, the amount of cane inserted into your embouchure and the angle at which you hold the oboe relative to your face.

I can make a wild reed tamer, a bright reed darker, a resistant reed more responsive and on it goes... the reed, the embouchure, the tongue placement on the reed or on just the wind influencing the reed are all at our disposal.

Finding more of this along the way is a part of the craft of oboe and the fun of oboe.

Seriously, I mean 40+ years into it and I am finding the things I thought my teachers said to exaggerate a point were completely, simply right on, spot on and honest in their tedious detail.

It is all part of the fun of and love of all things oboe. No detail too small to matter.

Good luck with it all.
