 Components of staple metal.

Hello friends
I am thinking in a new investigation, I dont know if you can or not. The investigation its know the components of the material of diferent staples. Which quantitie of brass, nickel or other metals have each staple. I think its a good idea to determine the flexibilitie.
How do you say about it.?.
Marcos.

This is a very interesting question, Marcos.

I don't make enough reeds to really know. I hope Cooper, Jonathan and others will be able to help... assuming that they have tried different metals too.

I usually prefer silver staples "just because".... its completely psychological.... oboists are supposed to by crazy, right? [toast]

My best reeds, before discovering Chiarugi and Stevens, were always on Pisoni silver staples.... the cheapest ones in Montréal! It is possible that the texture helped bind them better. Lorée brass or silver was never very good to me.

I have never read anyone say that specific metals change the sound or behaviour in specific ways. Maybe this is more a factor in d'amore and E.H. bocals.

Avoid plutonium, lead, mercury.

Look at the Chudnow staples... no cork, and using rubber o-rings over metal....

Neat idea.

Perhaps that plus ceramic, lucite or hard plastic might work, too.

Just keep in mind that the shape of the staple - different between manufacturers - makes a huge difference in the result, so the only fair comparison would be with different alloys on the same shape of staple.

That said, the difference between brass and German silver has always been a question in my mind. I've preferred German silver, but that's probably just a subjective judgment...
