I post regularly on four other Internet message boards besides this one, and spend time on about four others. And the main difference between woodwind. org and those is that woodwind. org doesn't have a General Interest/Chitchat/Coffeehouse/Lounge forum. All posts on the Oboe BBoard must be on the topic of oboes and EH.
So since all you can talk about here is oboes/EH, and since statistically there aren't a lot of oboe/EH players out there, and since of that statistical group, there are an even smaller percentage who surf the Internet, and of THAT group there are an even smaller percentage who patronize Internet message boards...I'm not surprised that this site doesn't have more traffic.
But that's not necessarily a bad thing. I don't think it's a defect, that there aren't more people posting here, and, no offense, I don't see a need to "drum up business" or something like that. The fact that we only have a small percentage of the traffic that the Clarinet BBoard has is not a negative reflection on the quality of the Oboe BBoard, it's just that there aren't that many people who have something to say on the subject of oboes, and who feel a need to post about it on an Internet forum.
I know that other Internet message boards out there periodically go through "Oh, no, why don't we have more members, how can we get more members" crises, but I don't think that's an issue here. One way you can get more members is to have a General Interest forum, and thereby keep all the people who randomly stumble upon us. However, I find it quite relaxing to post about oboes in a place where I don't have to wade through a lot of irrelevant chitchat about Britney Spears before I can ask my question about reeds or whatever, so I would be opposed to having that added just for the sake of increasing traffic to the site.
And far from this board being "elitist" or intimidating, I've found nothing but the warmest welcome here from Day One for my clumsy amateur approach. And I've seen nothing but friendly helpfulness towards the people who do just drop in to ask a single question. I've yet to see someone turned away with a haughty sniff from this board, saying, "You're not one of us." Even the people asking questions like, "Tell me what kind of oboe I should buy" get a 100% courteous response.
