 It definitely hurts when your efforts have not been appreciated.  (Or any appreciateion is not expressed!)  I am also an amateur and I play in one group where the conductor is very gruff and many players don't like him.  But he did give me a good insight.  He pointed out that making community music is a form of community service.  I took some comfort that the audience was appreciative and that helps me deal with the conductor!
