 Articulating A-Flat
Author: Old Oboe

In September I upgraded from my old Thibaud oboe to a 2004 Rigoutat Ecole (RIEC). I really love the horn and my band buddies couldn't believe that the sudden improvement in my tone was just due to the instrument! Lately I've noticed that when I play A or A-Flat I am squawking. This persists no matter what reed I use. I noticed that when I hold down the left hand G-sharp/A-flat key, the right key for that note is very loose. Also the pad (the last one at the bottom of the top joint) doesn't seem to have much pressure on it - that is cagarette paper slides through very easily. I suspect that is what is causeing the squawk. Am I close? Is it an adjustment I can do myself? I have the MacFarland book but not the Sawicki. (And I'm not much of a mechanic!) So far I haven't been able to find a teacher (although I have a promising contact) so I have no one to give me a second opinion! Thanks!

Linda
