Re: Finally New Oboe and Cor Anglais Arrives

Hi!

You have made a fine choice of instruments and you may wish to always keep them.

At the end of 2006, I bought a new Loree oboe and find that it sounds better as the months go by and it is easier to play than when new. I screwed the third octave key down so it doesn't get in the way accidentally when using the regular key. I really don't need it, I find.

The question of interest to me is related to the stability and pitch of G2 and Ab2 of the cor anglais. They can be checked on a tuner and I don't make reeds based on these notes. These are unstable on every cor that I've tried and I make them stable by alternate fingerings. I just wondered if Loree had been able to make those notes better than they were. The cause is, of course, that the bottom half of the cor acts as a detuning resonator for these notes. Bocals can make the instrument better or worse but, to me, have no effect on these instabilities. Some oboes to low B also have similar instabilities.

My Loree cor also has a too strong, but in tune, Eb2 which is also a built in acoustic situation. One just learns to back off a little on it.

The above situations also occur on oboe d'amores.

Best of Luck!
