When I practice I try to use the strap, and when I played a concerto I used one; but if I'm playing in the pit or have any changes (ie William Tell) I don't bother with it. I do notice if I play a lot regularly my arm gets tired, and sometimes I even use the strap (a different shorter one) with my oboe-- don't want any carpal-tunnel stuff happening!
