It's not made of aluminum, is it? (kidding!)
I have a hunch that your Signet would be far superior to this oboe. There are used reputable branded oboes that pop up fairly cheap on ebay, you can also find inexpensive, but playable condition oboes at usedoboes.com, mmimports.com, and charlesmusic.com.
Expect to pay $900-1200 for a (complete pad replacement) overhaul when shopping Ebay for "old" oboes, so it may not really be worth it unless you can play test and make sure the oboe is in playing condition.
Reynold's brand history from Olds website:
http://www.feolds.com/mainpages/reynolds.htm
On Reynold's flutes, from FluteNet on YahooGroups:
Quote:
When I was employeed by W T Armstrong back in the 70's we were manufacturing the
Reynolds (and Olds) flutes for their parent company (CMI - Chicago Musical
Instrument Co). It was my understanding that whichever manufacturer submitted
the best bid, did the Reynolds and Olds flutes back in that era; and many
different companys in Elkhart were doing them over the years. So, it is only by
comparing the instrument with know brands that one might be able to tell which
manufacturer actually did the fabrication. - Lars
There are a couple of threads here in the clarinet boards mentioning reynolds, though not much information:
