Cover a strip if card in fabric and then fold it to make several 'U' shaped sections the correct width as the bound part of the reed to grip them and glue this into the reed case.

Also, have a thin raised strip just below the grips with a gap at the lower end so the corked ends overhang, so when you push the corked end of the staple down, the reeds will pivot upwards making them easier to remove from the case.
