This might be a dumb question, but why doesn't the wood in string instruments crack as does the wooden oboe? Doesn't the wood on a violin or viola change with the seasons, and isn't there some vibration of the wood from the action of the bow on the strings? I'm insterested because my husband plays the viola.

I have noticed that the wood on an oboe is painted while the wood of the string instrument is stained and varnished.

I can only surmise that the difference between the oboe and a string instrument is (1) the warm breath flowing down the bore of an oboe and (2) the difference in temperature of the breath and the temperature on the outside surface of the instrument; these can't be an issue with string instruments. There are probably other differences between the string instrument and the oboe that I'm not considering, right?
