I'm interested in the IDRS Convention too. I might want to go next year.

I went. It was fabulous. Do go if you ever get the chance. Just imagine hearing music from morning until night in recital and concert. Imagine hearing Gordon Hunt, Thomas Stacey, Nadina Mackie Jackson, Carolyn Cove, David Weiss, Nancy Ambrose King, just to name a few, and then running into them at lunch or at the exhibits the next day.

The exhibits were unbelievable. Every major maker of double-reed instruments was represented. Attendees could walk around from table to table with a reed and try any instrument. I tried instruments by, Buffet, Bulgheroni, Fossati, Fox, Howarth, Loree, Marigaux, Rigoutat and Yamaha.

Even the playing by many who were trying out instruments was often worth hearing. One professor from Italy was trying out Harry Van Dias' Baroque instruments and was fabulous to hear.

I was lucky enough to live within a day's drive of IDRS 2007; however, I think I might just try to make the journey to Utah for next year's IDRS conference.

I don't know too much about Utah so I can't comment.

I stayed most of the week, but had to come home a day early because of commitments here. For recitals and classes you just show up. I did not play, but could have played during the open sight-reading sessions. I was too chicken to join in, but should have I suppose.

Hey, Andrew --

The Red Rocks are in Arizona (esp. Sedona), not Utah. The Grand Canyon is in Arizona (the far northern part of it), too. But my husband tells me that Utah is a very nice place -- he lived in Salt Lake for a few years.

Utah has Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. I saw Zion National Park when I was 12 years old....many years ago. It's beautiful. As I remember the rock cliffs and rock formations vary from cream to orange colors.

I would imagine that the IDRS Convention next year will be at Salt Lake City or surrounding area. Salt Lake City is located near the Great Salt Lake, and the lake is huge as I recall....very high salt content. The city is the center for the Mormon Church.

Much of Utah is desert, but it also has a mountainous area nearby.

Maybe someone else can provide more detail.

A.U.K. and CJ,
I don't know the location of the convention in Utah, but since Salt Lake is the biggest city in the state, I thought it would probably be there. Provo, Utah sounds just as good as any other place.

I might go next year because of the location.....a bit easier to get to from here (Eugene/Springfield, OR).

Are you a member of the society CJ?

Yeah, I paid the annual fee of $50 or whatever it is. I haven't gone before, but I will definitely go next year.

The IDRS conference next year is in Provo, UT (at Brigham Young University), as some of you have noted, and not in Salt Lake City. As for Andrew's concern about accomodations, the IDRS website will have information on housing for those who sign up. Probably there will be campus housing. And in 2009, and more convenient for our British colleagues, the conference is in Birmingham, England.

I have always wanted to go to England. I'd like to check out some places where my ancestors lived back in the 1600's....also Scotland. I doubt that I'll be able to go to England anytime in the near future though.

I think that the Ashcrafts lived in London, and the Swett's (named Swete in England) lived on the Isle of Guernsey. I need to get some documentation
regarding location in England.

Andrew wrote, in part:

..."The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" Out of interest how many of the Americans here would consider the trip to England for the conference?
`````````````````
Or the other side of the Pond, eh? : )
I didn't get to go this yr, but was able to make the one in TX 2 yrs ago, and my first one, 1997 at Northwestern near Chicago was fairly close to me. And my 2nd was in 1999, in Madison, WI, which is the closest to me it's ever been. I attended the premiere of Peter Schikele's bassoon concerto, and was even able to catch him coming off stage to shake his hand! It was cool, bc we were big fans of his PDQ Bach stuff in college.
In TX, I got to hear Brenda Schuman-Post's contest winning solo, Fantasy on Themes of Star Trek. An article she wrote about how the piece came to be appears in the most recent issue of the Double Reed.
And I met Meg Cassell (my reedmaker) at the TX conf; she was on her way to have lunch with several colleagues, and she invited me to tag along. One of the colleagues was Brenda-- so now I can say I had lunch with her!
It was quite hot there, I suppose some of our UK attendees might have a problem with that, but it sure it worth it to go. The vendor area is awesome, and there are many many performances to attend. Try to get to play in the double reed band on the last day - it's a blast!!
I just emailed DH that maybe we could make plans to go to UK in '09 since we've been talking about traveling. Maybe I'll see you there, Andrew!
Hi,
Did anyone who went see the presentation or try out the 'EMG'? The wiring system that reads the activity of your muscles while you play...
My oboe teacher and physiotherapist presented it!
