Different staples have different lengths of overlap with the bocal; consequently it is more informative to measure the lengh of the reed from the top of the twine to the tip rather than the total reed length. My reeds are tied to the very top of the staple, and measure @23mm from twine to tip on my Loree d'amore, and 22mm on my Marigaux d'amore (which is a lower pitched instrument). I gauge to the same thickness as I do for oboe reeds -- @ 58mm (keeping in mind that at my high altitude location, a thinner gauge is often used as compared to sea level). As mentioned on an earlier string, I use an unidentified large oboe shape. Using an American, W scrape, the total scrape length is 19mm, with the tip (at the edges) 4mm and (in center) 2mm, with a blended area behind it into the heart. I use Chudnow staples (the gold are mellow, and work best on the Loree; the silver have some 'ping' and work best on the Marigaux). And I use Laubin bocals. I recently tried some Hiniker bocals, which would also be a good choice, as are the Chudnow bocals. I wire some reeds, but only if I need to control the opening for some reason, or prevent too much overlap. I played a St. Matthew two days ago, at A 440, on my Marigaux and on a reed which was even shorter than my usual, and on which I had trimmed the overlap from the sides, making it much narrower than usual. And it did well, with great ease.
