Nono, not a new piece. Yeah, I read that clip by Craig, and i don't know where he got his planing board.

Planers are flat as you mentioned. The only one I know for sale is here for $190. I don't like my fillotine, or any of the push pregougers, because it doesn't guarantee you a perfectly flat piece of cane, and therefore will not get as consistent of results as a planing board would be.
