Chatting off-board with another oboe player reminds me of how much I admire the oboe playing of Paul McCandless.
If you already know his work, the last three Oregon CDs are extra spectacular. Forrest's Music carries some of them.
The Oregon in Moscow 2-CD set pairs Oregon with orchestral forces, some nice arrangements by Oregon members and very good production values by Steve Rodby. (He plays bass with Pat Metheny.)
Paul McCandless plays oboe and english horn, soprano saxes, penny whistles, midi wind controller, and bass clarinet on Oregon's 20-some CDs, usually in an improvisational context that also usually includes some demanding scored parts. He writes a lot of their material too.
He used to play with the Paul Winter Consort (1970s) and has done solo and other ensemble works as well.
Not that our orchestral and chamber repertoire is not satisfying and demanding, but Paul takes the oboe to a new level and its always a pleasure to hear one of his new CDs when it comes out.
