For a cheaper alternative, would a voice recorder do ok for recording playing?

I simply can't afford a $300 digital recorder so I'm wondering how it would work to use a voice recorder to record practices and such. I want a decent recording but by no means do I need the highest available.

I need something slim/compact that I can just throw in my case and I would like to be able to transfer it to my computer to put on my iPod or burn a CD.

I've also considered getting the voice recorder that attaches directly to your iPod. Has anyone had any experience using one of those?

Thanks!
