Re: History of American scrape oboe reed

I was just thinking of various old articles about Georges Gillet, Fernand Gillet, and Marcel Tabuteau that seem to pin down the initial evolution away from the French style. Tabuteau stands out as evolutionary in that lineage, but I don't know if his contemporaries were also as adventurous as he with reed experimentation.

I grew up on the east coast and all my teachers made a big distinction between Philly sound and New York sound. Since most of the major players were Tabuteau 'descendents' and now grand and great-grand descendents of his influence.

Perhaps your thread will gather other info about the early history of the American scrape. Its an interesting question.

I'm told David Ledet resides in Bolder, CO and is willing to talk reeds and even show his famous reed collection to interested parties. He may be a great resource if you can reach him.
