There was an article in the Double Reed how Alcohol breaks down the cellular structure of cane, and therefore breaks down your reeds. The article also noted that cigarette tar quickly clogs up reed fibers and shortens reeds. There was some other substances analyzed as well, but those stick out in my mind. Don't drink and oboe.
