 Selecting and Cutting Raw Cane
Author: Clarence
Date:   2003-05-10 02:49

I have access to plenty of cane of all sizes and would like to start cutting

some. Does anyone have any advice on cane size, length of cuts, use of

dead cane, drying time, drying conditions, etc ?

You cannot just pick cane. Do you have all the tools to work the raw cane.
The cane must be dry and be about 10-1/2 to 11mm in diameter.
You have to split the can with a splitting tool. Then
You need a pre-gouger and a guillotine machine and a Gouging machine, a scraper and micrometer
and finally a set of shapers.
After you have used the above tools you are finally ready to fold the cane and use the normal tools oboe players have i.e. knife, staple holder, thread etc. used in the binding process to make the finished reed.

I find few players have all of the above tools--- I did spot a set of tools on ebay for sale once.

When I lived in Texas, my french oboe instructor had the entire set and we made reeds from cane picked along the Trinity River in Fort Worth. The cane was not the best, rather green looking---growing season was different than in France. The finished reed was only good for 1 week of playing before it became unusable.

Jim,

I was thinking of cutting raw stock and letting it dry for a period of time.

I don't have the tools that you mentioned but will get them in time.

I realize the limitations and experimental nature of something like this.

Sounds like I need to invest in a oboe reed making book.

If you are interested in raw cane, you can call 1-800-348-5003 and ask for a free Woodwind/Brasswind catalog. Tell them to send you the Woodwind and not the brass catalog.
On page 110 is double reed supplies
Tube cane (10-11mm) price per pound is about $61 which is a lot of cane to make reeds if you have the tools and the time.

You can also get gouged and shaped (10 pieces) of cane for $11.75 and up. So the cost per reed can be about $2-$3 using the staples over and assuming you know how to work the reed into playing condition.

To look at the site plug in www.wwbw.com

I'm sure there are a lot of other sites for tube cane. As I mentioned before the cane growing wild in the USA is not the best grade for reeds---the growing season is not quite right.

I went to the cane patch this weedend and cut some cane. Cutting 10-11mm joints only yields 1 to 3 joints per cane. Also I noticed a big difference in the hardness of the old cane and the new cane. This is just an experiment and something I think I should try.

I noticed that 'ready to tie' reed cane can be bought on the internet. Is this what most people use ?

I have the latest wwbw woodwind catalog. I also have found plenty of cane suppiers on the web.
