I play a Loree Royal with a plastic top joint. I've done blindfold tests with my oboe along with Grenadilla wood Royals, Violetwood Royals, normal AKs, Yamahas, Marigauxs, and a few others and my oboe won flat-out. The tone was purer, had the most variation in dynamic (Mine was the loudest), and the most responsive of the bunch. My point is don't count out plastic top joints!
I did get a Weber Bore adjustment, which I attribute to much of the enhanced qualities.
The best oboe I ever tried was a laubin cocobola (which from what I've read is incredibly rare due to the poisonous wood dust), which had the warmest, strongest, and most responsive sound I ever encountered. It had a plastic sleeve in it, and if I could get one, I'd trade my Royal in a minute.
The nice thing is that I know unless I do something really dumb to crack my lower joint, my horn will never blow out, will never crack, and will never change. That's very comforting to me, and I'll probably play this instrument until the day I die.
