For what it's worth, I have to put in a plug for three oboists:
1) Ray Still, retired principal oboe of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1954-1993);
2) Robert Bloom, and
3) Paul McCandless
These three have the most beautiful and distinctive singing tone I've heard yet. Still was recorded extensively in his prime. Bloom passed away in 1994, but several of his recordings are available from Boston Records. McCandless studied with Bloom, has had great success as a jazz and "New Age" artist.
