Nielsen Reed making kit - opinions?
Author: JRJINSA

Oboe buds:

Please check this out:

http://www.nielsen-woodwinds.com/pc-4983-138-oboe-reed-making-kit-large.aspx

I am going to attempt to learn reed making. Do you think this is a good place to start? I intend on purchasing this kit as well as the Jay Light Reed Making Book and submerging myself.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Jay

You can't go wrong - everyone has to start somewhere. But you might want a better knife and plastic plaques later on when you get accustomed.

Years ago I bought the Howarth kits for both cor and oboe which is a good way to get to grips with making reeds.

I use Nielsen knives exclusively. I have tried Landwells, Philadelphia, herder, you name it. I always come back to the Nielsen knives -- they hold an edge for a long time, are easy to sharpen, and are just all around great knives. And, they are relatively inexpensive as opposed to Landwells which I beleive are upwards of 60-70 bucks these days.

Definately a good choice -- I play professionally and make reeds for many people and students. You cannot go wrong with these knives. Great investment! Two of my knives I have owned for 3-4 years. Go for it!

If I recall correctly, Nielsen knives are just Rigotti blades stuck in a typical Hardware store handle.

I love Rigotti double beveled knives for my initial scrape, and then a nice herder knife, such as the albion Forrests offers. I also use a knife I got from Weber Reeds. A decent knife should run $30-$40 bucks, and although you can spend a whole lot more, I've never found it necessary. I've owned landwells, (medium and hard), but didn't get any better an edge than my albion. I also owned a Charles knife which is a nice piece of steel, but a bit pricey.

Finally, I would strongly recommend David Weber's The Reedmaker's Manual. It's a very comprehensive reedmaking book. His reeds are fantastic.
