They would probably have started with just numbers, but the letters and numbers will yeild more possibilities - so this sequence will start from AA01 to AA99, then AB01 to AB99, AC01 until you get to AZ99 where BA01 will follow, then BA99 will be followed by BB01-BB99, BC01-BC99, BD01....BZ99, CA01....CZ99, DA01....DZ99, EA01... etc.

Pretty good system rather than having numbers in excess of 5 figures - don't forget oboes are narrow, so long serial numbers (more 6 figures) will be hard to squeeze in on the top joint between the keywork.
