When I look at older Lorees for sale, they have a strange (to me) serial numbering syste with letters and numbers. Can someone please explain to me the rhyme and reason behind this system? What do the letters and numbers mean?

They would probably have started with just numbers, but the letters and numbers will yeild more possibilities - so this sequence will start from AA01 to AA99, then AB01 to AB99, AC01 until you get to AZ99 where BA01 will follow, then BA99 will be followed by BB01-BB99, BC01-BC99, BD01....BZ99, CA01....CZ99, DA01....DZ99, EA01... etc.
Pretty good system rather than having numbers in excess of 5 figures - don't forget oboes are narrow, so long serial numbers (more 6 figures) will be hard to squeeze in on the top joint between the keywork.

On the left hand side, Midwest gives approximate dates for letters.
