My point about the angled clipping was not to say "that's how it should be done", but because there was some confusion in previous posts as to why it was done. (I think it the "which side of the reed" post)

In my university studies, and with both of my professors, I haven't met an oboist to date (and maybe it's pure chance?) who doesn't offset the blade length to some degree. I mean, it's not a huge difference in length - just a hair. (I achieve it by slightly lifting the reed when I clip it.)

I have to strongly disagree about the ignorance. Personally, I spent about 3 years and a whole wad of money screwing up of lot of reeds, because I was just doing whatever I had been taught, without really knowing why. The beginners approach. Since I changed teachers this year most of it was almost instantly alleviated. Mainly because my teacher filled me on *why* certain things are done certain ways, and because he encouraged me to really think...and not just do. That way I make the *choice* on how I make my reeds, and I can observe and learn from others, because I have a more complete knowledge of reedmaking, and a perspective from which to see it.
