Cleaning with a regular cleaning cloth will not prevent tarnish, but does help if your body oils or lotions/creams are a cause. You can slow down the process by keeping an anti-tarnish strip in your case until it receives some sort of treatment.
The higher the silver content the quicker the tarnish and silver plating is pure silver.
Silver plating doesn't wear off quickly unless it were extremely thin, but if it were that thin it would break off in flakes. If it looks like a gradual wearing it is probably tarnish.
Treated cleaning cloths are available at just about any music store.
Most are like this:
