I need to make a correction to the description of the three octave keys. In catalogs (and in real life), there are two and three octave key oboes. For the two octave key models, one octave key is played by the left thumb, the other octave key is played as a side key with the left hand. The "holes" you uncover for the C#,D,D# are not an octave key.

On the three octave key model oboes, the third octave key is operated also by the left hand thumb. The two octave keys operated by the thumb, one is the what I would say is the normal octave key found on all oboes for 4th line D up to G#, the thumb normal octave key is for A and up. The third octave key on some oboes is for notes over high high C---the third octave key lets those notes speak quicker.
