And......Balance the oboe!

Oboe's weight should generally rest on the right UPPER portion of the right hand thumb (aligned with finger nail for reference). Never go further inwards towards first finger joint! After doing so, left hand index finger when pressed down on '1' of upper joint (natural B note), should balance what is happening in the right hand. (balanced as in the 'push' on the upper joint will lessen the pressure on the right hand thumb) Painful as it may seem for the right hand at first, assuming you havent been doing it right before, it is worth the effort and you must learn to cope with it.

A 45 degrees posture may become higher or lower depending on your reed style, your embouchure (whether there is an occurence of overbite* or not), and how much reed you are taking into your mouth (ALWAYS play at the tip!).

*Overbite is defined here by having more upper lip covering the reed than lower lip, usually because of irregular upper teeth formation, like me! =) So a lower posture is permitted! But this is where a teacher comes in, it is difficult to confirm the presence of such a problem, so in the mean time, take everyone's advise and work on it!

All the best!

Howard.
