 Rotator Cuff Surgery
Author: Carol J

I'm having rotator cuff surgery in a couple weeks. I'm hoping to return to playing quickly after surgery. Anyone have this experience? Thanks. (Doctor says I can play, but hasn't given me a timeframe.)

I damaged my right shoulder the other year and to aid recovery, I used a Quodlibet Fhred to take the weight off my right arm and shoulder whilst playing.

I can only recommend an RDG BHOB or an Ergobrass support which clips onto a ring soldered to the thumbrest - you might need to get a cor anglais thumbrest fitted if your oboe one doesn't have a ring on it.

Don't bother with a sling/neck strap as they don't take the weight off your right arm and do nothing for posture, unless you play American style with the bell between your knees.

"unless you play American style with the bell between your knees."

Not sure where this came from, but most of the Americans I have seen and play with don't hold their oboe between their knees unless they have a tremendous overbite.

I think it is hyperbole Dane, as generally, oboists in the US tend to hold their oboes at a much lower angle than their European counterparts, generally.

I only hold my oboe between my knees when I am playing in a standing position. ;)
