Re: What sort of oboe do you play and why

I just tried the 901A and the 2001A models (the 2001 mode had gold posts, the 901 was standard).

I loved the 901A. Compared to the non A models it felt like it has considerably more projection, with a fuller, richer sound. I was playing on an American scrape reed for the record. If it weren’t new, I might have bought it, but it was a tad higher than what I wanted to spend

. I ended up trading in my Loree Royal for a Howarth XL Coco Jazz with an ebonite top and Cocobolo bottom joints. I love my Royal but the Howarth has a much more stable range, is easier to play and doesn’t have any of the slight pitch searching issues that were common to my Loree. And of course I don’t have to worry about cracks. At first I was a little turned off by the weird coloring of the Howarth, the top joint has a bunch of orange in it, and the Cocobolo joints have ages to slightly different colors so it’s quite a striking look. But ultimately the sound won over any aesthetic concerns.

Currently have my Royal on consignment but am tempted to ask for it back and just keep both Oboes, because they both have wonderful merits. The Royal has such a nice tone and unique expression to it. It would be great to have both options depending on mood. Of course That’s an expensive endeavor, but luckily neither oboe will nosedive in price anytime soon!
