Dear Nicholas,
It really does depend a lot on how much you want to do it and how much time you dedicate to it. You will definitely have to get a private teacher. It is hard to say...I go to Wilfrid Laurier University and one of my friends is here on oboe (under the teaching of James Mason, it's a competitive place to get into), and he has been playing for only 3 years! Not only that, but he's really proficient at it! Now he probably has a lot more time to dedicate to the oboe than you do because that's what he's studying (as am I), but the main thing is that he spends all his time in the oboe studio making reeds and practicing (plus he's just naturally talented at the instrument). Anyway, after beating around the bush for so long, the first thing that you might be pleasantly surprised to hear is that oboeists are really hard to find for something like a community orchestra. I would say if you practice regularly and have a teacher that's willing to do your reeds for you, you'd be looking at 3-4 years. Some people can do it in 2, others it takes 5. It really depends on the person. All I can say is that if you really love the sound of it, you're already off on the right foot! Just keep practicing (and eventually, learn to make your own reeds...hopefully you have a lot of space time!) and have fun.
Graham
