 Orchestral Excerpt Question

Orchestral excerpt question: oboe solo in the trio of Beethoven’s 4th
Symphony.

Specifically having problems with the Eb-F trill.

I am playing LH Eb with forked F trill. However, with the half hole open, the F sounds like a pressure-bleeding valve on a radiator! Is there a fingering that would make it prettier? Has anyone tried putting a little bit of tape on the half hole to make it a little less open?

Use the back 8ve key for this trill as it's the forked F that needs that to work.

Play the upper register Eb as 8ve1 xxx|xxxEb or 8ve1 xxxEb|xxx and trill with RH finger 2 (mid fingerplate).

See attachment - wouldn't it be easier to use the RH Eb key for this trill considering it resolves to a D (thus keeping it all in the right hand)?

Just how the F sounds in this trill is a function of your instrument, your reed, and your support. As Chris mentioned, often the solution can be to use the thumb octave key and closed half-hole, or the thumb octave key and open half-hole....try both to see which feels/sounds best.

When I play this passage, I like to end the trill on the Eb, and if I maximize my support, the F comes out well enough on my Loree AK so that I don't have to use an alternate fingering.

Also, as Chris mentioned, I can see no reason to use the left Eb key to play this passage.

Thanks everyone. Didn’t even think of just playing it with the thumb octave. That did the trick.
