James Caldwell of Oberlin College died after a lengthy illness.
He was an oboist who was the likely candidate to replace John deLancie when he retired from the Philadelphia orchestra, but he decided to not accept the post. Instead he went on to teach at Oberlin College where he trained many fine oboe players. Besides being a great oboist his interest in early music led him to the Viola da Gamba, and because of his efforts he rediscovered an almost lost school of da gamba playing and revitalized interest in early music in America. His passion for early music led to the creation of the Baroque Summer Institute at Oberlin College.
