Author: SarahC  Date:   2017-01-19 10:58 Affordable and reeds are an oxymoron... Kge (professional) and the Howarth academy reeds are good if u can source them. I tried Jones ztudent reeds... And we'll.. They are inconsistent... And don't fit my Tom sparks oboe as well as the other brands. Tried the emerald plastic reeds. And chartier ones too. They pitch bend something chronic. And sound like a balloon releasing air. U really do get what u pay for. A quality Reed will make playing easier, and will last longer. And u will progress faster. Cheap reeds from ebay... Well out of 20 I bought... One of them worked... For a while. They always sounded brittle tone wise.. I thought I could out smart everything price wise... Both with clarinet and oboe reeds but no... The quality of the cane is poor too. So even manipulating them is fruitless. Tried that too. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But a good Reed should last a month of heavy practise.. And your progress will reflect that. I must say I have found a use for my cheap rubbish reeds. I used them to practise crowing while I am driving. It has really helped my embouchure durability. (from this... Read.. I did a month of oboe practise last Jan and didn't play again until December 7. Been practising my backside off.. And am aiming to do grade 8 in a few months. But this is the way I roll so I have needed lots of extra embouchure strengthen practise to get my embouchure to be able to handle the high notes for any duration of practise.
