 Oboe reed knives

Hello fellow oboists,
I've been using a Vitry remake knife for the past year, and I'm thinking of an upgrade right now. My current knife doesn't hold its edge as long as any of the Landwells I've tried, and it isn't as good for tip work either. I've looked for Landwell knives online, but they all seem to be terribly expensive. Could you guys recommend a good hollow ground knife for tipwork that isn't above $70?

Thanks,
ckoboe777

I really like the Nielsen wedge knife. Reasonable price, easy to sharpen, holds an edge well...I use them for everything, including tip work.

I've been using a Rigotti double hollow-ground for years*. That might be closer to the Landwell and it is half the price. The squared handle is comfortable and it doesn't roll about on your reed-desk (like the landwell does, annoyingly)

The picture on this page (scroll down) shows a bunch of knives including both the landwell and the rigotti, so you can compare.

* (I've never found it habit-forming)

Once I found that my knife which I thought was a Vitry was far worse than needed. The conclusion was that it was not a genuine Vitry but a copy.

Thanks for the replies! I just tried out a few knives, and I've settled on the Nieslen!

I'm curious what everyone thinks of Ando knives... I took some private time with Andrea Ridilla on working reeds from shaping onward and she swears by it..:

John Dee at UIUC also swears by Ando...I swore when I saw the price... :P

If they are still made in Japan (?) they are probably worth the money.

I've been using a MCW Deluxe Razor Knife since 2004ish and it's held up great!

I am a huge fan of the Neilsen wedge knives as well. I also like the Charles razor knife and the chudnow knives.

Just an FYI... I ordered an Ando knife from Howarth of London... saved over $20 with the exchange rate and all..... thought I'd pass along

Have you tried a reed geek?

I just started using one and am quite happy with it for adjusting reeds and little danger from tsa taking them away.

Eh...I would avoid the reed geek alone for making reeds. It's not refined enough for really delicate work. The little shapes block everything you're scraping and you have to hold it at an awkward angle to see.

They're useful for scraping out the windows, but that's pretty much it. And of course the added benefit of not getting it confiscated, at school especially. You can avoid the TSA problem by putting the knives in a checked bag.

They're also useful for bassoon reeds because it's larger and don't need all the detailing that an oboe reed does.

Definitely. Reedgeeks don't kill bark as easily as "legit" knife would. I wouldn't use a Reedgeek for the back though...
