Re: Why is baroque reed bigger?

The bore is wider. The sound is also much mellower. The oboe evolved to a much more strident, focused, louder, higher-ranged sound, which probably only works with a smaller reed.

The easiest way to notice the difference is sticking a cor reed onto the baroque oboe. It sounds so thin. You really need that large and flexible reed to effect the sound. The cor reeds are much tinier (~12.5 mm diameter cane) compared to the baroque oboe reeds (~14-15 mm).

It's a pretty bumpy learning curve, but so fun as well. Probably knowing how to play cor helps as it gives experience in playing on a bigger reed and requiring more breath support.

Baroque bassoon reeds are humongous! I think the width is almost double!
