I am constantly amazed on how different batches of tube cane produce different oboe tone colors.
Same scrape ... same oboe however different tonal quality with different tubes of cane. Similar to statistics ... there are differences between batches as well as differences within batches; although within group differences are much less and significant.
So keep a couple of different tubes bundles on hand ... if you want a variety of tone color. Or order gouged cane from different sources. You may get a pleasant surprise.

Cane like grapes with wine produces a variety of results.
Seriously, I have cane supplies from 25+ years back in rotation now.
Some terrible cane mature/seasons and good things happen. The opposite can happen but less so, I think.
Around 1905 or so, a great player said he could not use cane not his possession for at least ten years. Fernand Gilet's uncle Claude, I think.
Anyway, I was seriously impacted by that statement while a student at conservatory in the late 70's. I have bought and stored cane for years ever since.
Mostly a pund at a time. And truly, after 5 years or so, It does work much better.
So, imagine the difficulties of getting ahead of that curve for a younger player. It can take decades to really get ahead.
Make friends with oboe players spouses... seriously. You figure out the rest....:(
