I have not used one myself, but looking at the videos posted by Brian Charles Music, it is obviously strictly a scraping tool. I doubt it will take a big enough bite to use as a roughing tool as a knife would be, but for finishing work it could be easier to control than a knife.
The cutting edge appears to be a contoured face meeting a flat face. If so, then sharpening would just be a matter of lapping the flat face.
I'm going to have to buy one and try it out...
