I use the three winds to position the cane perfectly before applying 'final tension' and crossing over, rather than applying 'gradual' tension with each wind. So in that case, it wouldn't make any difference whether I started my winds from the end of the staple and travelled downwards, or below the staple and travelled upwards. Interesting. FWIW, I rarely crack cane when tying.
